Kapila is an Engineer worked over 30 years in the field of renewable energy sector. With his expertise in different fields of renewable energy – micro hydro power, solar energy, and biomass energy, he has contributed substantially to the promotion of renewable energy applications in the country. Kapila has conducted renewable energy research in Austria on a North-South Dialogue scholarship, in India on a United Nations University fellowship, and in Thailand on an AIT fellowship.
After joining the University of Ruhuna in 2000, as a Lecturer in Agricultural Engineering at the Faculty of Agriculture, Kapila stared work on agro-processing, renewable energy, and rural technologies with special focus on local Agriculture. In 2005, he worked as a Principal Investigator on an Industry-initiated and National Agribusiness Council-funded project to develop an appropriate dryer for rural use. This led to a new dryer technology that combined many novel features. Kapila extended the research work to the development of technologies and finally to the dissemination of these technologies with a market-based approach. This is probably a hallmark of his achievements.
